Anthony Petrello and Cynthia Petrello are parents and they believe in miracles. Carena is their daughter and she is eight. She was finally able to start to chew food although it took a lot of repetition. This gave her parent even more inspiration. Carena is also learning how to talk and walk, a feat that should not be considered a miracle at her age, although it is. She was born with a neurological condition that has made what is usually considered normal in development considerably more difficult for her.
Carena was born at just six months with a weight of only twenty ounces and periventricular leukomalacia on Wikipedia. This disease occurs when there has not been enough oxygen going to the brain and is common in premature babies.
Anthony Petrello is the CEO of Nabors Industries and belongs to the board of the Texas Children’s Hospital. He says they have looked into everything they could find from Johns Hopkins to stem cells. His only concern is to be able to help his child. Unfortunately he was not able to find anything that would apply to children. The need of these children has not yet been addressed. The research necessary to help their child was still elusive.
Finally, Cynthia and Anthony Petrello found what they were searching for at the Children’s Hospital right there in Texas. They are determined to help not just their daughter, but all children with this disease have a chance. They still believe.
The signs of this disease are largely unknown and her and her husband never thought about having a daughter who suffered from this particular disorder. To not be able to watch her take her first step or listen to her talk. They are used to being able to do whatever it takes and fix what is wrong. To set a goal for what they want done or where they want to be and have the ability to achieve that goal. This situation is totally different.
